Plate-loaded or selectorised: which belongs on your floor?
Every Citadel machine is plate-loaded, so we have an obvious bias and we would rather say it out loud than pretend otherwise. Here is the honest version: what each type is actually good at, what breaks first on both, and the floors where selectorised is the right call.
Every machine in the Citadel range is plate-loaded with Olympic sleeves, so we have a bias and there is no point hiding it. What follows is the version we give gyms on the phone, including the part where we tell them a selectorised station is the better buy for what they are describing.
The two words describe how the resistance gets to the lifter, and almost every downstream difference falls out of that one decision.
What the two words mean
A selectorised machine has a fixed stack of steel plates and a pin. You move the pin, the cable and pulley system carries the load to the handle, and the increment is whatever the manufacturer decided when the stack was made.
A plate-loaded machine has no stack and no cable. The lifter hangs Olympic plates on sleeves and the load travels through the frame and the pivot to the handle. The increment is whatever plates the gym owns, down to fractional plates if the floor keeps them.
Loading increments, and why they matter more than they sound
A selectorised stack usually steps in fixed jumps. That is fine in the middle of the stack and awkward at both ends. A strong lifter runs out of stack, and a beginner or someone coming back from injury finds the first jump is a large percentage of what they can currently handle.
Plate loading removes that ceiling and that floor at the same time. The same hip press takes a 5kg plate for someone in their first month and takes as much as the frame is rated for from someone who has been training for a decade. On our machines that ceiling is a long way up: every bearing, pin and pivot in the range is rated beyond two tonnes.
Several machines in the range also carry more than one loading peg, and that is a different lever again. Moving load between pegs changes where in the movement the resistance is heaviest rather than just how much of it there is, so two lifters with different sticking points can set the same machine up differently.
What breaks first
On a selectorised machine the answer is almost always the cable, then the pulleys, then the selector pin and the guide rods. None of those are design faults, they are wear parts doing their job. They are also the parts that put a station out of service, because a frayed cable is not something you can leave on a commercial floor for a fortnight while a replacement ships.
A plate-loaded machine has fewer things that can do that. There is no cable to fray and no stack to bind. What it has instead is pivots, and pivots are where a plate-loaded machine is either built properly or is not. We use wheels rather than linear bearings for exactly this reason: under the off-axis load a heavy set actually produces, linear bearings bind, and wheels keep rolling.
The honest trade is that a plate-loaded machine asks more of the gym. Plates get left on. Sleeves need to be kept clear. A station nobody strips down is a station the next member walks past.
Throughput at peak
This is the argument that decides most floors, and it is the one where selectorised wins cleanly.
At six o'clock on a Tuesday, a pin takes two seconds and a plate change takes thirty. If your floor runs circuits, or serves a membership that moves station to station quickly, or has a high proportion of members who will not want to handle plates, the pin wins on throughput and it is not close.
Plate-loaded suits a floor where people train in sets with rest between them, work up in weight over a session, and are already comfortable loading a bar. Most strength-focused gyms, most performance facilities and most serious commercial floors look like that. Plenty of gyms do not, and those gyms should buy accordingly.

What we would ask before recommending either
Who is on the floor at your busiest hour, and what are they doing. That single answer settles it more often than any specification comparison does.
A gym running structured strength programming with rest between sets loses nothing to plate loading and gains the whole range of load. A gym running forty people through a circuit in an hour will find plate-loaded stations become a queue, and no amount of frame quality fixes a queue.
The second question is what the room is already missing. A floor with plenty of selectorised stations and no lengthened-range glute work does not need another pin machine, it needs the movement pattern. That is usually the more useful way to look at a purchase order than picking a side in this argument at all.
We build one type and we are open about it. If what you describe is a circuit floor, we will say so, and we would rather do that than sell you eight stations that end up used as coat racks between nine and five.
Common questions about plate-loaded machines
Is plate-loaded better than selectorised?
Neither is better in general; they suit different floors. Plate-loaded gives a finer load increment and a much higher top end, and has no cable to fail, which suits strength and performance floors where members train in sets with rest between them. Selectorised is faster between sets, which suits circuits, rehab and high-turnover floors. The deciding question is who is on your floor at its busiest hour and what they are doing.
Do plate-loaded machines have a weight limit?
They are limited by the frame and the pivot rating rather than by a stack. Every bearing, pin and pivot in the Citadel range is rated beyond two tonnes, so in practice the ceiling is far above what any lifter will load. A selectorised machine is limited to the stack the manufacturer fitted.
What breaks first on each type?
On selectorised machines it is the cable, then the pulleys, selector pin and guide rods, and a failed cable takes the station out of service until a replacement arrives. Plate-loaded machines have no cable and no stack; their wear point is the pivot, which is why Citadel machines run on wheels rather than linear bearings. Linear bearings bind under the off-axis load a heavy set produces.
Why do some machines have more than one loading peg?
More than one peg lets you change where in the movement the resistance is heaviest, not just how much resistance there is. Moving load between pegs shifts the resistance profile, so two lifters with different sticking points can set the same machine up to suit each of them.
Can I mix plate-loaded and selectorised on one floor?
Most commercial floors do, and it is usually the right answer. Use selectorised where throughput matters at peak and plate-loaded where members train in sets and need the load range.
