What we mean when we say commercial grade
It is on our homepage, and it is on the page of every machine you are comparing ours with, which is exactly why the phrase settles nothing on its own. Here is what we mean by it, the five questions that carry more than the words do, and our answers to all five.
Commercial grade is on our homepage. It is also on the page of every machine you are comparing ours with, and that is the trouble with it: the words are free, nobody is asked which standard they mean, and a phrase everyone can use tells you nothing about who to buy from.
That does not make the idea empty. There is a real difference between a frame built to take twenty years of a busy floor and one built for a spare room, and the difference is worth a great deal of money to a gym that gets it wrong. The difference is simply not carried by the phrase. It is carried by numbers, and numbers are a thing a manufacturer either publishes or does not.
There is a standard, and it is rarely quoted
ISO 20957-1 is the international standard for stationary training equipment, and it does exactly what the marketing phrase pretends to do: it sorts equipment by who is going to use it.
Class H is for domestic use, in a private home where the owner controls access. Class S is the studio class, for professional and commercial use, in gyms, clubs, hotels, schools and sporting organisations where access is regulated by the operator. Class I is institutional, meeting the Class S requirements at a higher level of accuracy, which is what a rehabilitation or elite sport setting tends to be asking for.
So the concept has a definition. What it does not have is enforcement in the ordinary commercial sale. No one checks the phrase on a product page against the standard, which is why the phrase has drifted loose from it. If a certificate genuinely matters to you, and it does for a lot of tenders, ask for the certificate and the class in writing, and ask it of every supplier you are comparing rather than only the ones you already doubt.
What the phrase is standing in for
Underneath the words there is a real question, and it is about duty cycle. Not can this machine take a heavy set, but can it take a heavy set every eight minutes, twelve hours a day, for a decade, loaded by people who will not always be gentle with it and will not always strip it down afterwards.
That is the load a commercial floor actually applies, and it is the reason a home machine and a gym machine are different objects rather than the same object at two prices. Everything below is a way of asking the duty cycle question in a form that has an answer.
Five questions worth putting to any manufacturer

None of those are gotcha questions. They are the things a manufacturer knows off the top of its head if it built the machine, and has to go and ask somebody overseas if it did not.
The last one is worth dwelling on, because it is the one buyers skip. A machine that does not fit the smaller half of your membership is not a cheap machine, it is an expensive one that half your floor walks past.
The numbers we publish
So that this is not a list of questions we have avoided answering ourselves, here are ours.
The frames are locally sourced Australian steel, 4mm plate with 75 by 75mm solid RHS through the load paths. Every bearing, pin and pivot in the range is rated beyond two tonnes. The machines are cut, welded, powder coated and assembled in Queensland, and the coating and upholstery are done by trades a few minutes from the workshop rather than batched offshore.
The warranty is twenty years structural, seven years on moving parts, one year on upholstery and powder coat, and the structural term assumes the machine is bolted to the floor as specified, which is an engineering condition rather than a way out of it.
Every machine in the range adjusts to lifters from 142cm to 203cm, and the pendulum squat from 137cm. Those are measured on the machines, not inferred from a drawing.
The carriages run on wheels rather than linear bearings, which is the less obvious choice and the one that survives off-axis load, and it is the sort of decision that only shows up in year three.
The honest summary
The phrase is where the conversation starts, not where it finishes. We keep using it because it is what buyers search for, and then we publish the numbers underneath it, which is the part that actually answers the question. Ask for those five numbers, of us and of everyone else you are considering, and compare the answers rather than the adjectives.

A manufacturer that built the machine can answer all five immediately. A reseller badging an overseas factory usually cannot.
Does a long warranty prove a machine is commercial grade?
