Which machines actually earn their footprint

30 May 2026 ยท 5 min read

Floor space is the most expensive thing in a gym. A blunt look at which movement patterns justify a dedicated machine and which ones you can cover another way.

Every square metre of a commercial floor has to pay rent. So the honest question with any machine is not "is it good?", because plenty of machines are good, but "does it earn the footprint it takes, on this floor, for these members?"

Start with the movement, not the machine

Work backward from the patterns you are missing. A room already full of squat racks and leg presses might not need another knee-dominant machine. It might need a hip thrust or a lengthened-range glute press that nothing else in the room covers. A room short on space might be better served by a 3-in-1 hack that folds three movements into one patch of floor than by three separate stations.

That is the logic behind the 3n1 Hack Squat: hack squat, linear hack and calf press sharing one set of rails. For a gym that is tight on room but does not want to skip a pattern, it earns its footprint three times over. For a gym with the room and the traffic, a dedicated linear hack that is always set up may be the better buy.

The answer is sometimes "you don't need that one"

We would rather talk a gym out of a machine it does not need than sell it a station that sits unused in a corner. Tell us the floor, the space and the movements you are missing, and we will tell you honestly which machines are worth it, including when the answer is none.
